If we look at the monuments and other historical memorials of Sarajevo today, one would think that men are the only people worth remembering in rich, challenging and contested history of the city. Have women been participating in society processes? What was their role? Does history of Bosnia and Herzegovina recognize women stories? What can we learn from the stories? How to empower women if they are invisible in today´s society?

The main goal of the project “Sarajevo History Book – Guidelines for Women Heritage” is to explore and promote the stories of women that participated in political and cultural life of Sarajevo – women connected with the collections of History Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, National Art Gallery of BIH, Museum of Literature and Theater of BIH. Discovering the traces of women heritage will also reveal new directions and possibilities in promoting women heritage in society today.

This project is based on the idea to mark the physical space of the city of Sarajevo as “open history book” with a map of the city tracking the contribution of influential women who shaped city of Sarajevo. Some of the „women stories“ are kept in cultural institutions, but many of them are waiting to be discovered and told!
