It consists of an armored locomotive, several armored armed wagons, and auxiliary wagons or platforms. It first appeared in the American Civil War (1861-1865). During World War II, armored trains were most widely used in occupied European countries, especially in the former Yugoslavia. They were used to protect important railway lines and facilities from attacks by partisan units.
