The Story of Solidarity: Carrying the Wounded

The composition “Carrying the Wounded” is a work by Croatian sculptor and art educator Antun Augustinčić (1900-1979). Augustinčić, known for his rich artistic body of work in Yugoslavia, gained international recognition by winning numerous competitions for monuments. The sculpture “Carrying the Wounded” from the Historical Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina is just one of several compositions created for various buildings in Yugoslavia with the aim of celebrating the People’s Liberation Struggle.

The composition consists of three figures. In the foreground, there is a wounded person being carried by two comrades, one on each side, symbolizing the unity and mutual solidarity among participants in the People’s Liberation Struggle. The bodies are sculpted in a way that reveals the process of emerging from the stone mass.

The sculpture was purchased from the artist in 1965 and has been part of the museum’s permanent exhibition since then.
